Kamehameha Day

For generations, islanders have celebrated the Kamehameha Day on June 11 in honor of the warrior chief and conqueror, ka na`i aupuni, of these islands - King Kamehameha I. Once a national holiday of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Kamehameha Day is now a state observance, complete with parades, concerts, lú'au festivities and a two-day hula competition. (...)

Throughout his life, Kamehameha witnessed much change, particularly with the coming of the first westerns in 1778. (...) After his passing in 1819, he would be succeeded by two sons and two grandsons, establishing the Kamehameha Dynasty. (...)

In honor to the Kamehameha Day, the Royal Hawaiian Center will celebrate a parade, Sat. June 13. Beginning in downtown Honolulu at 9:30 am, near the lei-draped statue of King Kamehameha, the parade will make its way through Waikìkì along Kalàkaua Avenue, ending at Queen Kapi'olani Park.

Highlights include floral floats, marching bands, dignitaries, celebrities and colorful pà'ù units where women on horseback don flowing satin skirts (pà'ù) and colorful flower lei representing each Hawaiian island.
